The Prefecture of Ahaia is in the Peloponnese, borders with Corinth to
the east, Arcadia to the south and with Elia to the west. To the north is the
Gulf of Corinth and the Port of Patra. the Prefecture has 300,000 inhabitants.
Ahaia has an interesting landscape with mountainous and coastal regions.
Patra is the capital and port of the Prefecture, a major hub of western
Europe for commerce and travellers to the Peloponnese and mainland Greece. It is
the third largest city in Greece. Patra is divided into the upper and the lower
city, Ano Poli, Kato Poli, with fine street planning, open squares, beautiful
parks and interesting monuments. The Squares of Vassileos Georgiou and Olgas,
the mediieval Castle ruins, various churches, the spectacular site of Psila
Alonia and museums are worth seeing.
The historical, scenic town of Kalavryta has a popular ski centre.
