The Prefecture of Magnisia is located in the south east of Thessalia
covering an area of 2,636 km2 bordered by the sea of the Pagasiticos
Gulf to the east. The land is mainly mountainous with the highest peak of Mount
Gerakovouni at 1,726 m. The mountain range of Pilio to the north east is very
green with a ski centre. There are two small valleys and the northern part is
the large fertile plain of Thessalia. The capital of the Prefecture is the city
of Volos.
Mythology has it that the Centaurs lived on Mount Pilios and that the ancient
city of Iolkos was the site from where Jason departed in search of the golden
fleece. There are many important archeological sites to visit as: Iolkos,
Pagases, Dimitrias, Feres, Angialos and Sesclo.
The coasts face the open Aegean Sea and large sandy beaches can be
found on the Pagasiticos Gulf in the south.
Magnisia is also renowned for its healthy climate, it is blessed with mild
winters and cool summers.
