The Prefecture of Messinia is located in the west of the Peloponnese
covering an area of 2,991 km2 bordered by the sea to the west and
south. The land is divides almost equally between mountainous regions with the
imposing gorge of Vyros and the highest peak of Mount Profitis Ilias at 2,407 m
in the Taygetos range and a fertile plain in the valley of Messinia.
The area offers Venetian castles and traditional villages in atural
environments.
The capital city and Port of Kalamata is located on the coast to the south of
the Prefecture.
