Florina is located in the region known as Western Macedonia and borders FYROM to the north, Albania to the west, the Prefectures of Kastoria and Kozani to the south and Pella to the east with a population of roughly 50,000.

The landscape is a combination of mountains, plains and lakes. The lakes of Great Prespas, Small Prespas, Vergoritida and Petron are the more better known ones. During the summer visitors can sun themselves on the banks of lakes Small Prespas and Vergoritida that have been adapted to act as beaches for visitors.

The winter is especially cold with the temperature often falling below 0° C and there is a winter resort in Pisoderi.
