The prefecture of Serres is a part of the geographical district of
Eastern Macedonia bordering Bulgaria and FYROM to the north, the Prefecture of
Drama to the east, the Prefecture of Kavala to the south east, the Prefectures
of Thessaloniki and Kilkis to the west. A Prefecture gifted with exceptional
natural beauty, unique archaeological sites and impressive historical monuments
with about 193,000 inhabitants.
Serres Town is the capital of the Prefecture, a modern town and the commercial
centre of the region. The mountains are the most prominent aspect of the natural
environment in this area, snow-capped in winter and covered in rich green
vegetation during the summer. There are many archaeological sites, museums,
scenic churches and monasteries, traditional villages and the Vrontous ski
centre to attract the visitor in any season.
Other attractions include Lake Kerkini, the Cave of Alistrati, the Gorge of
Angiti, the Nigrita thermal springs and the ancient town of Amfipoli.
