The Osrednjeslovenska (Central Slovenia) region lies in the central
part of the country. The central city is Ljubljana.
Since prehistoric times this area has been a junction of important trade routes between the western Alps, Pannonia and
the northern Adriatic.
The region has a varied economic structure with a predominant proportion of service industries, amongst
which the wholesale and retail trade is prominent.
On account of the large representation of service industries, which are less involved in international
trade, and role of the city of Ljubljana as the administrative, cultural and
business centre of the country, the Osrednjeslovenska region is not markedly
export-orientated.
