Skopje, the capitol of FYROM, is strategically set on
the Vardar River at the crossroads of Balkan routes, midway between Tirana and
Sofia, the capitals of neighbouring Albania and Bulgaria.
Skopje Old Town is the most attractive section of the city comprising of
shops, grills, restaurants and pastry shops. In the Old Town is the Church of
the Holy Saviour with its unique iconostasis executed in masterful woodcarving
dating back to the 18-l9th centuries.
Skopje is the political, economic and cultural centre of Macedonia. A major
centre of the metal-processing, chemical, timber, textile, leather and printing
industries. Its industrial development has been accompanied by the intensive
development of internal, external trade and banking, as well as activities in
the fields of culture and sport.
It has a warm climate, dry summer and autumn, but relatively cold winters
with heavy snowfall.
