Java is the most populated island of Indonesia and provides many
contrasts of people, religions and cultures. Java is also known as the 'Garden
of the East'.
Java is dominated by an active volcanic mountain range stretching along its
length. The island boasts of immense natural beauty from peaceful villages and
fertile countryside to smoking volcanoes and ancient monuments. However there is
also an unattractive side visible in its dirty, overcrowded cities, particularly
the capital of Jakarta, clogged with traffic and pollution with a glamorous city
centre and some fine Dutch architecture.
In central Java lies the most popular city of Yogyakarta, the centre for
Javanese art and culture, nearby the astounding Hindu complex and the
Buddhist monuments of Prambanan and Borobudur. The active volcano of Mt Bromo is
to the east amid stunning scenery.
