The Prefecture of Lakonia is in the south of Peloponnese with the
capital being Sparta covering an area of 3,636 km2 and is bordered
by the sea to the south where the deep Lakonian Gulf divides the region into two
peninsulas. The land is mainly mountainous with the highest peak of Mount
Profitis Ilias at 2,407 m in the Taygtos chain with the Evrotas River flowing
south into the centre of the Lakonian Gulf.
There are some caves in the area of the village Pyrgos Dirou with historical
and of spelaeological interest, these caves were inhabited from prehistory as
findings testify and today with their stalactites and stalagmites are a
wonderful spectacle for visitors to see.
The islands of Kythira and Elafonissos are beautiful places for a day trip or
for a longer sojourn.
The climate is temperate, with mild winters near the sea and cool summers in
its mountains.
