Tayside is the region north of the Firth of Tay, a region of
Scotland replaced by Angus, Dundee City, Perth and Kinross unitary authorities.
The new unitary authorities were formerly the three districts of Tayside region
(1975-96). Tayside region was formed from the counties of Perthshire,
Kinrossshire, Angusshire and the city of Dundee. To the north the terrain is
mountainous and with beautiful lochs, while to the south are the fertile lowland
that bear Scotland's largest crop of raspberries and other soft fruits.
The region in eastern Scotland has become a key location for companies
in the high-technology in Dundee, now recognized as a city focused on its
scientific research sectors. Tayside Software Centre is located on Dundee
Technology Park works to assist local and foreign-owned companies operating in
the software sector and Perth Business Park offers quality accommodation to
companies. Dundee Medipark has been developed for the companies moving to
Tayside to take advantage of the leading-edge research coming out of the
Universities of Dundee, Abertay and the Scottish Crop Institute. Companies in
the life sciences cluster include Axis-Shield, Cyclacel and Argonex. A building
developed by the Wellcome Trust is the largest single investment in R&D
facilities in recent years. Major companies in the region include CGU, Alps
Electric, Tokheim and Madison Cable. Recently Tayside was delighted by BT’s
decision to set up a call centre in the area employing 1,000 people.
Tayside is one hour from Edinburgh Airport and two hours from Glasgow Airport by
car.
