Information about Cumbria

Cumbria is one of the most beautiful regions in Britain and an extremely popular area for walkers and climbers, as well as people looking for somewhere peaceful and tranquil to spend a few quiet days. The hills and mountains provide a glorious backdrop to the area and contrast with the many hundreds of Lakes that give the area its Lake District title. The Lake District is split into various regions, each with their own stunning lakes, valleys and individual towns and villages. With 3,560km of public paths and many more permissive paths and open access areas, the Park has much to offer walkers.

There is plenty to do in the area to suit all tastes and ages. The coast area from Burgh-by-Sands to Ravenglass is part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Roman Baths. Muncaster Castle makes for a great day out with its world-renowned gardens and the World Owl Centre, as does Ravenglass with its narrow gauge steam railway which runs on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway through some of the most beautiful countryside in the Lake District, through the Eskdale Valley. Carlisle is though of as a border city into Scotland and is a historic city with a dominating and magnificent castle. Its historical past is blended with the modern present and the city is rich in romantic myth and legend being linked to figures such as the Emperor Hadrian, Robert the Bruce, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Rob Roy. The Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery allows visitors to see and touch Roman relics and artefacts whilst the Linton Tweeds Centre shows how cloth is woven.

Outside the Lake District, Cumbria has the fascinating Furness and Cartmel peninsulas and part of the Arnside and Silverdale in the south; a dramatic coastline of cliffs and beaches overlooking the Irish Sea in the west; the historic city of Carlisle, Solway Coast and remote borderlands beyond ancient Hadrian's Wall in the north; and the beautiful Eden Valley, the North Pennines and a corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the east.
