Information about South Ayrshire

South Ayrshire is situated in the south west of Scotland extending from Troon and Symington in the north to Ballantrae and Loch Ryan in the south. The Area includes the towns of Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Maybole and Girvan, together with an extensive rural area containing many small, remote villages. It is an attractive area with a mix of agricultural land, woodlands, forests and a long coastline.

The area is steeped in history and culture, together with a wide range of leisure and sporting facilities. There are numerous golf courses including the world famous Royal Troon and Turnberry and Scotland's first Country Park at Culzean Castle. The Scottish Lowlands extend from the Scottish Border, through Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Wigtown, Dundee, Stirling and the Isle of Mull. This area of Scotland would have to be one of the prettiest with it's castles, forests, glens and the sheer romance that is Scotland.

The region of Ayrshire is best known as the birthplace of Robert Burns, 1759-96, Scotland's great poet, loved and revered the world over born in the village of Alloway.

The most attractive part of Ayrshire is the south, from the main town, Ayr, south to Girvan. North of Ayr is a series of low-key resorts interspersed with ports and industrialized towns stretching to the mouth of the Clyde. One of the region's main attractions is the beautiful Isle of Arran. The Isle of Jura and its surrounding islands are great for hikers and nature lovers who especially love the rugged wilderness.

The Wallace monument is located approximately 2kms south of Stirling. Constructed in memory of William Wallace who was hung, drawn and quartered in 1305. Also at the monument is displays including Wallace's two handed sword. The view from the top of this monument is just spectacular and well worth the visit. Stirling was home to the famous Rob Roy and since the film 'Braveheart' there has been renewed interest of this area. Loch Lomond is the largest inland waterway in Britain.

St Andrew's is synonymous with the golfing fraternity. Golf has been played on this beautiful course since the 15th century.
