South Ayrshire is situated in the south west of Scotland extending
from Troon and Symington in the north to Ballantrae and Loch Ryan in the south.
The Area includes the towns of Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Maybole and Girvan,
together with an extensive rural area containing many small, remote villages. It
is an attractive area with a mix of agricultural land, woodlands, forests and a
long coastline.
The area is steeped in history and culture, together with a wide range of
leisure and sporting facilities. There are numerous golf courses including the
world famous Royal Troon and Turnberry and Scotland's first Country Park at
Culzean Castle. The Scottish Lowlands extend from the Scottish Border, through
Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Wigtown, Dundee, Stirling and the Isle of Mull. This area
of Scotland would have to be one of the prettiest with it's castles, forests,
glens and the sheer romance that is Scotland.
The region of Ayrshire is best known as the birthplace of Robert Burns,
1759-96, Scotland's great poet, loved and revered the world over born in the
village of Alloway.
The most attractive part of Ayrshire is the south, from the main town, Ayr,
south to Girvan. North of Ayr is a series of low-key resorts interspersed with
ports and industrialized towns stretching to the mouth of the Clyde. One of the
region's main attractions is the beautiful Isle of Arran. The Isle of Jura and
its surrounding islands are great for hikers and nature lovers who especially
love the rugged wilderness.
The Wallace monument is located approximately 2kms south of Stirling.
Constructed in memory of William Wallace who was hung, drawn and quartered in
1305. Also at the monument is displays including Wallace's two handed sword. The
view from the top of this monument is just spectacular and well worth the visit.
Stirling was home to the famous Rob Roy and since the film 'Braveheart' there
has been renewed interest of this area. Loch Lomond is the largest inland
waterway in Britain.
St Andrew's is synonymous with the golfing fraternity. Golf has been played on
this beautiful course since the 15th century.
