Noord-Holland is a province of the Netherlands and is located in the
northwest part of the country with the county capital at Haarlem. Other cities
include the capital Amsterdam, Hilversum, Alkmaar and Zaandam.
Noord-Holland forms a peninsula between the North Sea and the IJsselmeer with
more than half consisting of reclaimed land in the form of polders below
sea level. The island of Texel is also part of Noord-Holland. The reclamation of
land was started in 1600.
